What is a
Doula?

A doula is a non-medical professional trained to provide emotional, physical, and informational support to families throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum period–often referred to as the “fourth trimester.”

Doulas support parents continuously through the full spectrum of the childbearing experience, offering compassionate care before, during, and after birth.

“Studies show that birth doula support significantly improves maternal and infant health outcomes, reducing cesarean births, instrumental vaginal births, need for oxytocin, and shortened durations of labor.”

Birth Support

Through evidence-based education, calm reassurance, and advocacy, birth doulas help reduce fear, stress, and anxiety while supporting informed decision-making. Their presence has been shown to improve birth outcomes, including shorter labors, fewer medical interventions, and increased satisfaction with the birth experience.

During labor, a birth doula offers hands-on comfort measures such as breathing techniques, movement, positioning, and relaxation support while ensuring the birthing person feels seen, heard, and supported. Birth doulas also support partners by offering guidance and encouragement, creating a cohesive and empowered birth team.

“The support of a postpartum doula can significantly enhance a mother’s physical and emotional recovery after childbirth.”

Postpartum Support

By alleviating stress and reducing feelings of overwhelm, doulas empower mothers to focus on rest, recovery, and bonding with their newborn. Through practical help around the home, doulas create a supportive environment that allows mothers to follow the 5-5-5 recovery method—spending 5 days in bed, 5 days on the bed, and 5 days around the bed. This method prioritizes rest, promotes healing, and helps the body reset and renew after childbirth.

Emotionally, postpartum doulas offer non-judgmental support, providing a compassionate ear and helping to normalize the emotional highs and lows of the postpartum period. In addition, doulas often facilitate smoother partner and family dynamics by offering guidance and reducing household stressors, ensuring a stronger support system during this transformative time.

“The presence of a postpartum doula can transform the experience of caring for a newborn, offering both practical guidance and emotional reassurance.”

Newborn Care

For new parents, adjusting to life with a newborn can be overwhelming, but a doula provides hands-on support to build confidence in their caregiving abilities. This support significantly reduces anxiety, as parents receive real-time answers to their questions and personalized strategies tailored to their family’s needs.

Doulas not only alleviate stress but also create an environment where parents can focus on bonding with their baby. With the right guidance, parents feel reassured and capable, laying a strong foundation for a thriving family dynamic.

Birth doulas support families during pregnancy and labor by providing education, reassurance, and hands-on comfort measures. Their role includes helping parents understand their options, prepare for birth, and advocate for their preferences in collaboration with their care team. During labor and birth, birth doulas offer continuous support through techniques such as breathing guidance, positioning, movement, and emotional reassurance—helping reduce fear, promote confidence, and create a more positive and empowered birth experience for both parents and partners.

Postpartum doulas provide essential support after birth, helping families adjust to life with a newborn. They are uniquely trained to recognize signs of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and can offer early support, education, and referrals when needed. Postpartum doulas assist with newborn care, feeding support, recovery, and emotional well-being, while also helping parents advocate for their needs, prioritize rest, and build confidence in their parenting abilities.

Together, birth and postpartum doulas provide continuous, relationship-centered care that bridges pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood. Through compassionate guidance, evidence-based education, and practical support, doulas help families feel supported every step of the way—creating a strong foundation for healing, bonding, and long-term family well-being.
